This is an early black label Ceil Chapman and is really a wonderful example of her earlier pieces. You mostly see the later, more fitted versions from Ceil for sale out there (that wiggle dress silhouette made famous by Marilyn Monroe) but this is an earlier late 1940s, early 1950s piece and it has lots of wonderful period details. The black silk crepe skirt is cut slim and has a curving cut layer of black lace that sits over it and gives it the illusion of fullness. The waist is nipped in with a draped panels that curves under the bust line and gives you curves. The bodice of simple and pretty. It is made of the same fine black lace as the overlay with a scooped front and back. The neckline is cut quite wide and depending on your shoulders you could easily get away with wearing this slightly more off shoulder. Excellent condition.
The bodice is lined in the same black silk used for the skirt and the skirt is unlined. It closes with a side painted metal zipper. Hand finishes
